SALINA — Jarrod Nowak of McPherson has yet to play in his first high school tennis match, but he’s performing like a grizzled veteran this summer.
Playing in the prestigious Little Caesars Saline County Open on Monday, Nowak advanced to the finals of the Men’s Open bracket even though he’ll be just a freshman this fall at McPherson High.
Nowak won his two bracket matches in straight sets, losing only three games along the way.
Nowak has to wait until Friday to play Clarke Renfro of Salina for the championship. Renfro is a past champion of the event.
Recently, Nowak won the McPherson Junior Open’s 18 and 16 age divisions. In the 18 finals he defeated state doubles runner-up Kento Aizawa for the title, while in the 16 division he defeated Andrew Snell, who was fourth in the Class 4A State Tournament last month.
