Long night ends in disappointment for Senior Legion

SALINA — Officially, it was 5 hours and 6 minutes.

That’s a long night of baseball with nothing to show for it but two losses.

McPherson’s Senior American Legion took on longtime rival Salina Tuesday night, with the 3-hour, 3-minute first game resulting in a 6-5 Falcon victory in 13 innings before Salina completed the sweep with a 12-10 success in what seemed like a snappy 2 hours and 3 minutes.

Despite the setbacks, there were positives on the night.

In Game 1, McPherson’s Jack Reifschneider pitched seven innings of sparkling relief, allowing just one run. He walked only one and fanned six as he came on after Caleb Schmidt worked the first five innings.

Jacob Loecker eventually took the loss in the 13th inning. He had three hits in the game, along with Marcus McDaniel. Casen Hoover drove in three runs.

Post 24 certainly hit the ball well enough in Game 2, tagging two Falcon pitchers for 13  hits. Most disappointing about this game was that McPherson raced to an 8-2 lead after 1 1/2 innings, but back-to-back four-run innings for the Falcons vaulted them to the win.

McDaniel took the loss in relief of Loecker.

Loecker collected three more hits to finish with six on the night. Hoover also had three hits, while Schmidt and Mikey Saverino had two apiece.

The double dip left McPherson at 7-5 on the year. It is tentatively scheduled to play tonight at Wichita before hosting the Hooper Showcase Summer Tournament beginning Friday.
