WICHITA — McPherson’s Senior American Legion baseball team was hoping to build some momentum heading into this weekend’s Hooper Summer Showcase.
Post 24 was leading the Wichita Aviators 6-5 late on Wednesday, but the hosts came up with a three-run rally for an 8-6 victory in the single, nine-inning game.
McPherson has lost three straight and will take a 7-6 record into Friday’s 8 p.m. game against the Kansas Indians at Grant Complex.
Cody Starkel, Griffin Myers and Casen Hoover all pitched for McPherson. Post 24 coach Tony Schmidt lauded the effort of Starkel.
“He threw well,” Schmidt said. “He was tired. He caught 20 innings the night before. Jacob Loecker caught nine innings last night, so that was good.”
Schmidt said Hoover and Marcus McDaniel hit the ball well.
“We don’t hit slow pitching very well,” Schmidt said. “We’ve got to be able to adjust. Alex Sitts joined us for this game and he stole a couple of bases, which was good to see.”
Schmidt said his team is looking forward to the weekend.
“It’s a tournament that if we play like we can, we can compete,” he said. “It’s a tournament where we have some hope. There’s some good teams. I know the Kansas Cannons (who are in McPherson’s pool) will be pretty good. I think we should be able to handle the other two teams.”
