McPherson’s Senior American Legion had no lingering effects from Friday’s heartbreaking loss, as it roared to a pair of victories today in the second session of the third annual Hooper Showcase Summer Baseball Tournament at Grant Complex.
Post 24, which lost 4-3 in walk-off fashion to the Kansas Indians (Fort Scott) in its only game on Friday, went 2-0 on Saturday with an 8-2 win over Concordia and a 10-0 run-rule rout of the Kansas Green Cannons.
“We saw faster pitching in the second game and swung the bats a lot better,” McPherson coach Tony Schmidt said. “We kind of let Concordia hang around in the first game, but I was really pleased with how we played in the second game.”
Jack Reifschneider went the distance for the win against Concordia, while Caleb Schmidt threw a four-inning, one-hitter in the nightcap, which means he’ll be available for spot duty on Sunday. The hitting was frenzied, including a big game for Cody Starkel against the Cannons.
McPherson played especially good defense in the second game, highlighted by tremendous catches by Reifschneider and Kolby Reed in the final inning.
There were still three games that had not been completed at the time of this posting. All the teams go into single-elimination bracket on Sunday. The first two games are set for 10 a.m. at Grant Complex. Post 24 was the second-place finisher in its pool, as the Kansas Indians were first with a 3-0 record. The Kansas Green Cannons were 1-2 and Concordia was 0-3.
The championship game has a scheduled 6 p.m. start.
