Area dairy farmers can sign up starting now for a program from the USDA's Farm Service Agency.

McPherson County FSA Agent Michael Westerman says enrollment is open in the 2015 Dairy Margin Protection Program for coverage in 2016.

“This is a voluntary program established under the 2014 Farm Bill,” Westerman said. “It gives participating dairy producers the flexibility to select a coverage level best suited to their operation.”

The program replaces the MILC program and is effective through Dec. 31, 2018. It offers catastrophic coverage at no cost other than a id="mce_marker"00 annual administrative fee and various levels of buy-up coverage.

Enrollment in the program ends Sept. 30.
