HUTCHINSON — It was one of those cases of “what could have been” for the McPherson Senior American Legion baseball team this weekend in the Hutchinson Wood Bat Tournament.
Post 24 finished 2-1, but did not qualify for bracket play after the tournament had to be revamped because of weather problems on the opening day of play.
On Friday, McPherson lost 2-1 to the Kansas Green Cannons but only 3 1/2 innings were played when it was called because of rain and the Cannons were declared the winners.
“I’m not complaining, but we stopped and started and the runs they scored were basically because of the conditions,” Schmidt said. “I felt sorry for Marcus (starting pitcher McDaniel) because he had to keep warming up. We stopped and started. This is a team we beat 10-0 at Grant (Complex) in four innings. I wish we could have played a whole game. It just shows you have to be ready to play at the start.”
Post 24 was unscathed the final two games. It defeated the Kansas City Monarchs 6-0 behind the dazzling pitching of Jack Reifschneider and then polished off the SEK Drillers 8-0 as Caleb Schmidt also threw zeroes.
“Jack is our best pitcher right now,” Tony Schmidt said. “He looks really good.”
Schmidt added that McDaniel and Caleb Schmidt have somewhat tired arms right now as the season is nearing its end. They logged heavy innings during the high school season while Reifschneider didn’t pitch that much and is fresher.
Schmidt was pleased with Post 24’s hitting throughout the weekend.
“We had more hits than them (the Green Cannons),” Schmidt said, adding that the team had double digits in hits in the final two games.
Schmidt said another highlight was beating the Kansas City Monarchs, a team Post 24 lost to 11-1 for the 14 state championship a few years back.
McPherson’s scheduled home game Tuesday with Concordia has been cancelled due to Concordia not having enough healthy players. Post 24’s next action is Wednesday when it hosts Hutchinson.
Post 24 is 12-10 on the year.
