McPherson’s Junior American Legion baseball team will be somewhat shorthanded when it opens zone play on Wednesday in Great Bend.
Post 24, 16-10-1 on the season, will have somewhat of a skeleton crew available due to injuries and other obligations.
“We are excited and yet nervous for zone as we are headed there with 10 or 11 guys,” McPherson coach Heath Gerstner said. “Alex Sitts dislocated his shoulder in the Salina tournament and is done for the summer and that is a big loss. He has been an outstanding lead-off hitter for us this summer and just made play after play in the outfield. We have a few guys gone to camp and vacation, so we will give it a whirl.”
Post 24 is the No. 3 seed and opens at 5:30 p.m. against Hays. The loser has to play a second game on Wednesday against the loser of Buhler and Pratt.
Post 24 should be well rested as due to rain and cancellations, it has not played for nearly two weeks.
“Having seven teams in the field makes it exciting, but (assistant) coach (Matt) McCasland and I are a bit apprehensive as we haven't played in 10 days due to games being cancelled last week,” Gerstner said.
Sam Brossard or Dylan Werries will get the nod in Game 1. Brossard has been the team’s best pitcher on the season as the big lefty as reeled off some impressive scoreless streaks.
The top two teams move on to the state tournament in Salina.
