The Opera Academy of the Midwest is in full swing at the McPherson Opera House, with 30 students aiming to polish their skills under the tutelage of professionals.

McPherson Opera House Company Executive Director John Holecek was at a performance the students gave Sunday at the McPherson Museum that really moved him.

“Because they were so good and you think how much effort has gone into their lives already to become singers of that caliber,” Holecek said. “And they're becoming better singers at the Opera Academy of the Midwest.”

Holecek said Sunday's performance served as a preview for Friday night's Wichita Grand Opera presentation of “A Night at the Opera.”

“This Friday night, it's actually the opening event of the entire Wichita Grand Opera season,” Holecek said. “What it will be is a series of arias and events from the upcoming Wichita Grand Opera season. [Sunday] was a preview of Friday, Friday is a preview of the whole season.”

Friday's performance of A Night at the Opera begins at 7:30 p.m. at the McPherson Opera House. Tickets are available starting at $20 and can be purchased online atwww.mcphersonoperahouse.org, by calling (620) 241-1952 or by stopping by the box office at 219 South Main Street.
