GREAT BEND — Win and advance.
That’s what McPherson’s Junior American Legion baseball team did on Wednesday in the first round of zone play.
Post 24 secured a 7-4 victory over Hays behind the combined pitching of Dylan Werries and Trey Hanken. The game, which started late because of overnight rain on Tuesday, was later delayed in the fourth inning, which made it quite a marathon night.
“Dylan started on the mound and gave us a nice start and got the win,” McPherson coach Heath Gerstner said. “Trey relieved Dylan after lightning delay and really did a nice job commanding the zone and letting his defense work behind him.”
Gerstner admitted his team had to knock off some rust.
“The most impressive thing was just a win,” Gerstner said. “We haven't played in 10 days and defensively we looked timid and for us to punch a ticket to Salina (for state) we must be more sound.”
Gerstner said the Juniors jumped out to an early lead as Hays’ pitcher struggled throwing strikes and their small ball produced the early offense.
McPherson is playing today at 3:00, with the opponent not yet determined as Andover and Great Bend are playing this morning.
