McPherson’s Senior American Legion baseball team will take on old rival Salina at 6 p.m. Monday in the opening round of the American Legion Zone Tournament in Newton.

The teams are well acquainted this summer, having played four times. Salina currently holds a 3-1 record, with two of its wins by one run and the other by two.

McPherson’s lone win was by two runs.

This is perhaps the best zone in the state as all four teams have winning records, led by No. 1 seed Newton, which is 22-6.

Newton and Buhler meet in Monday’s second game.

If McPherson wins on Monday, it would play at approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday. A McPherson opening-game loss and it would play at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

No matter what happens in the zone, Post 24 moves on to state because it is serving as tourney host and receives an automatic bid. If McPherson reaches the finals, there will be no championship game, which is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday. Two teams advance to state.
