TOPEKA — A grueling weekend, which included five games in one day, resulted in a fourth-place finish for the McPherson 14U Lady Express at the USSSA Nationals.
There were 30 teams in the field, representing eight states.
The Lady Express played two games on Thursday, starting with an 11-1 loss to the Arkansas Hurricanes before bouncing back with a 7-5 victory over Team Nebraska.
On Friday, the Lady Express played three games — a 4-3 loss to The Titanium from Oklahoma, a 7-1 victory over the Cobras and a 6-4 winning decision against the Blue Heat.
McPherson then ripped off four straight wins to start Saturday’s play — 9-1 over The Groove, 1-0 over the Patriots, 6-5 over the Lady Sooners and 8-2 over The Whiplash.
In their fifth game of the day — the team played back-to-back throughout — Insanity handed the Lady Express an 8-1 loss.
“We did well when we had to,” McPherson coach Mariah Wedel said. “It was a good season. We got a lot better.”
The team roster include Halle Giddings, Kenzie Goering, Sydney Boese, Brooke Miller, Zoie Nichols, Gracie Bruton, Lindsey Gerlach, Emmie Ryals, Lexi Williams, Kassie Sneath and Morgan Jones.
Chris Goering was the team’s assistant coach.
Team members Nichols, Miller, Williams and Goering competed in the skills competition, taking first in the baserunning relay. Williams took first in the catcher’s competition.
