WICHITA — Every putt that went in for McPherson’s Treg Fawl during his practice round on Monday lipped out in his first round on Tuesday in the Kansas Amateur Golf Tournament.
Fawl, who had blistered Wichita Country Club for a 4-under-par 67 in practice, made only one birdie in the first round of qualifying and finished with a 76.
Fawl is playing his second round this morning and probably needs to be around par or just over to advance to the field of 64 for Thursday’s match play. He was tied for 75th after Tuesday.
Fawl shot matching 38s, his only birdie coming on the par-5 ninth hole. He double-bogeyed a pair of par-3s.
“I hit the ball extremely well,” Fawl said. “I had four straight birdie putts lip out from inside 10 feet on the back nine.”
Fawl said if he can get the putts to go in, he’s confident he can make the cut. He is the five-time defending champion of the McPherson City Tournament and has won the title six of the last seven years.
Wichita’s Sam Stevens was the first-day leader with a blistering 6-under-par 65, while six golfers were two shots back. Thirteen players were in red numbers, among them Hutchinson’s Turner Wintz, who just completed his senior year at Hutchinson High.
