The developers of the new Terra Nova Luxury Apartments are hoping the complex will entice more people to stay in McPherson as they get jobs at the city's various industries and businesses.
Owner Brent Paul told KBBE News during a tour of the complex yesterday that he is an alumni of McPherson College, having attended in the early 1990s, and fell in love with McPherson.
He says the apartment complex, located on Avenue A across from the McPherson Cemetery, is designed to bring a more suburban living feel to what he calls a 'gem' in central Kansas.
“It's a small town, but it has a lot of larger city amenities and is close to larger cities, but it's a place where you can raise your family and feel safe,” Paul said. “That community feel, it's hard to find in a lot of towns. I think McPherson, and I don't want to use 'take it for granted,' but it's a really blessed place to have that. It's just an atmosphere and a culture here that I like.”
The complex will be market rate, meaning it won't be income-based housing and is geared towards those young professionals working in some of the industries and companies in the area that may wish to find a more suburban feel while still living nearer to their jobs.
Developer Ross Vogel has developed similar complexes in other rural areas and credited McPherson Mayor Tom Brown and the city staff for helping bring the complex to McPherson. Talks started around two years ago between Brown and Vogel, with the mayor outlining what the City sees as the needs in the coming years as it faces continued growth.
“We felt that there was the community here to support [the complex],” Vogel said. “In other places, we kind of have to make the project work and fit it around what we can get for rents. Here, we felt that there was this big demand for what people had when they were elsewhere and was in line with the type of jobs and the type of incomes that they had.”
When finished, the complex will boast 40 two bedroom apartments, 16 one bedroom and eight three bedroom apartments. Leasing applications are being taken now, with the intent to be open late September to mid-October.
The property will also feature a community clubhouse with a 24-hour fitness center and a kitchen, as well as a swimming pool.
