WICHITA — Topeka’s Andrew Beckler unleashed a birdie barrage on the back nine this morning to hand McPherson’s Treg Fawl a 4 & 3 loss in the first round of match play at the Kansas Amateur Golf Tournament.
Fawl was 3-down through seven holes, but then won three straight holes to tie the match going into No. 11.
At that point, Beckler went into a zone, reeling off five straight birdies on holes 11-14. He needed only to halve the 15th hole to move on and did that with a birdie.
It was a wild match, with Beckler winning eight of the 15 holes while Fawl won four. They halved only three holes.
Beckler, who just completed his senior year of high school at Washburn Rural where his team won the Class 6A state championship, made seven birdies on the day and Fawl made four.
