SALINA — McPherson’s Junior American Legion appeared to be well on its way to Friday’s championship game of the Class A State Baseball Tournament at Dean Evans Stadium.

Post 24 had a 7-2 lead tonight after 4 1/2 innings, but Arkansas City roared back to eventually tie the game at 7-7, then won it 8-7 when it pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth.

McPherson plays at 10 a.m. Friday against the winner of tonight’s late game pitting Doniphan County and Paola, the two teams Post 24 defeated earlier in the tournament. A victory and it would play Arkansas City at 12:30 for the championship.

McPherson would have to win that game to force a second championship game, which would be played at 10 a.m. Saturday. Post 24 won the state title last year by coming back through the loser’s bracket after losing its first-round game, eventually defeating Andover in back-to-back games.

More will be posted in the morning.
