SALINA — McPherson’s Junior American Legion baseball team needs to repeat its first-round victory over Doniphan County this morning in order to play for the championship of the Class A American Legion State Tournament at Dean Evans Stadium.
Post 24 dropped into the loser’s bracket on Thursday with a heart-breaking 8-7 loss to Arkansas City after it had sped to a 7-2 lead after 4 1/2 innings.
The Grays stormed back with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to send the game into extra innings, winning it in the bottom of the eighth.
Errors hurt McPherson as it committed six in the game.
Offensively, Post 24 was led by Sam Brossard, who had a double and single, good for two RBIs. Jeffrey Reed also had two hits.
Raine Reitsma, Zane Myers and Dylan Werries all took turns on the mound, with Werries suffering the setback.
McPherson is playing Doniphan County at 10:00 this morning in the finals of the loser’s bracket. Should Post 24 win, it would have to defeat Arkansas City in the 12:30 game to force an extra championship game at 10 a.m. Saturday.
McPherson defeated Doniphan County 9-2 in Wednesday’s opener, but the game was tied at 2-all going into the seventh inning when Post 24 exploded for seven runs. Doniphan County played Thursday’s late game, rolling to an 8-0 rout of Paola.
The question now becomes just how much pitching does McPherson have left. Of course last year, it wound up having to come all the way back through the loser’s bracket after losing in the first round to win the championship, the first time in tournament history that had been accomplished.
