TOWANDA – McPherson High’s boys were on the precipice of blowing out the Circle Thunderbirds in the first quarter on Friday, sprinting to an 18-3 lead behind a precision offense and suffocating defense.
But the T-Birds always have a puncher’s chance with their barrage of 3-pointers and after being down 15 points after 8 minutes, they hung around in the half behind 4 3-pointers and defensively their defense slowed the MHS offense to a crawl in the second period.
The T-Birds outscored MHS by 3 points over the final three quarters, but the Bullpups still came away with a 59-47 victory to improve to 4-1 in AVCTL Division III and will take a 6-3 record into Monday’s McPherson Invitational, where they’ll take on Manhattan at 7:30.
It was the first game back for MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon, who missed the last two games due to COVID.
“Defensively we did a really good job on (Drew) Middleton,” Kinnamon said. “He’s such a good player. I thought (Jayden) Dukes did a really good job on him (allowing him only 8 points). We let (Luke) McGinnis -- what did he make 3 3s in a row? -- but then we did a better job of running him off the (3-point) line. I like that we’re getting better defensively, but we’re having lapses. We can’t have those.”
Seth Madron scored 27 points to lead the Bullpups, while Adam Elliott chipped in with 10. Mason Miller provided some punch off the bench by making 4 of 5 shots and scoring 8 points.
“The game changed when Seth kind of took it over,” said Kinnamon, as the springy junior scored 14 of his points in the second half, including 10 straight MHS points at one stretch.
Trevor Cowman scored all 14 of his points in the second half for Circle, while McGinnis added 12, 9 of them coming in a row early in the game.
The Bullpups now prepare for a Monday matchup with Class 6A Manhattan in the first round of the McPherson Invitational, which has totally changed this year due to COVID.
“I told the guys all three teams we’re going to play in the tournament are tougher teams than those guys (Circle),” Kinnamon said. “We’re going to have to play better. We’re capable. We show flashes and that’s what’s frustrating because I want this team to be a more mature team and we’re just not yet.”
The JVs pulled away for a 55-40 victory behind 10 points by Dawson Feil. Eleven Bullpups in all scored.
The MHS ninth-graders stayed perfect on the season with their usual offensive eruption, 71-45. Eight Bullpups scored, paced by Kyden Thompson with 15 points, while Henry Boese tallied 13, Owen Pyle drained 4 3-pointers for 12 and Cory Muehler chipped in with 11.

TOWANDA – There’s little doubt now which team is the best in AVCTL Division III.
McPherson High’s girls and Circle were both undefeated in league play heading into Friday’s showdown on the T-Birds’ home floor, but that challenge inspired the Bullpups, who blitzed Circle in the first half to lead 39-11 and went on for a 62-34 victory. It was just the second loss of the year for the T-Birds.
MHS finishes the first time through the league with a 5-0 record and will take a 7-2 overall mark into the Mid America Classic.
The Bullpups were ready from the get-go, leading 17-9 after a quarter and then closed the half on an amazing 20-0 run. Tack on another 5-0 sizz to start the second half and MHS completed a 25-0 domination. There was no letdown in the third quarter as the lead swelled to 58-19 before the T-Bird regulars ripped off 12 straight points against the MHS backups to start the fourth quarter to make it closer than it was.
“We were extremely happy with the girls, their effort was outstanding,” MHS coach Chris Strathman said. “The stuff that we worked on defensively to prep for Circle was dead-on… we kind of had an idea of what they were going to run. We did a good job of taking them out of what they wanted to do.”
Grace Pyle finished with 18 points, Kassidy Beam scored 16 and Peyton Howard added 14 as the Bullpups spread the wealth offensively. Lauren Labertew scored only 2 points, but combined with Beam to limit Circle’s top scorer Kimmalee Cook to 11 and just 4 of 13 from the field. She had been averaging about 20, according to Strathman.
“Labertew and Beam did a great job on her,” Strathman said. “(Madi) Michaelis got pretty close to her average I think because of her couple of 3s there at the end of the fourth quarter. Other than that we made them work hard for every little thing they got, while we were getting a lot of extra possessions by offensive rebounding, just crashing the boards and that, after a while, just kind of breaks the spirit of your opponent.”
MHS will learn of its first-round Classic opponent sometime this week.
“We’ll take a couple of days off. We’ll take tomorrow off and we’ll take Tuesday off,” Strathman said. “We’ll have to balance things out and be smart about it.”
In the JV game, the Bullpups were a 47-36 winner. Alexis Dukes led the way with 14 points.
In the ninth-grade game, nine Bullpups scored and they played lockdown defense in a 46-10 rout. Alex Romero had a big game with 18 points.
MHS (62) – Labertew 1-2, 0-0, 2; Beam 6-12, 0-0, 16; Schmid 1-1, 0-0, 3; Howard 7-10, 0-2, 14; Whorton 1-2, 0-0, 2; Pyle 6-18, 3-3, 18; Alvord 1-2, 0-0, 2; Malm 2-5, 0-0, 4; Pelzel 0-0, 1-2, 1; Smith 0-1, 0-0, 0. Totals 25-53, 4-7, 62. 3-pointers – Beam 4, Pyl 4, Schmid 1.

It’s been a busy week for the McPherson High boys swimming team as it competed Tuesday at Hutchinson and Thursday at Salina.
The Bullpups won the five-team Hutchinson meet with 394 points, well ahead of runner-up Buhler with 304. MHS then finished second to Derby in both divisions of the Salina Invitational. There’s a division with MHS, Derby and Salina Central and then a division scored with MHS, Derby and Salina South.
“As is early January tradition, we went back-to-back this week at Hutch and Salina,” MHS coach Matt Cotton said. “We had a lot of success, with a near sweep of the Hutch meet to take first (a much smaller affair than we are used to, only 5 teams), and had a load of great swims tonight in Salina in the double-tri meet with South and Central. While we missed out of first in the team standings to a strong Derby squad, we still managed to top the podium in several events and both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.”
Even though MHS was second at Salina, Cotton said there was a lot of quality from his team.
“It would be hard to pick out individual performances to highlight, but tonight we had a few notable swims -- Cody Achilles locked in his state qualifying time in the 500 freestyle, Logan Ediger managed consideration cuts in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke and Tytus Reed of Smoky Valley also found state consideration in the 200 individual medley (barely out-touching Ediger for 1st) and in the 100 butterfly as well,” Cotton said. “Perhaps most exciting from tonight, though, was a new PR time for the 400 freestyle relay (Matthew Powers, Achilles, (Wesley) Wurm and (Rhys) Vanderhoof with a 3:27.02, setting a new benchmark at the top of the 5-1A state leaderboards as of KSHSAA's last update, smashing the previous top time by 3 seconds. This is a team that has a serious shot at capturing their own state gold medal this year, and to post a time like that this early in the season is exciting to see.”
Cotton said the Bullpups always seem to turn in good marks at Salina.
“Though its only my third year with the team, it seems that we always swim that extra bit faster in the Salina South pool, and the ‘Salina Magic’ definitely held this year,” Cotton said. “These guys continue to impress me with what they're capable of doing in the water.”
