MARION — Hesston High’s softball team saw its season end earlier this week with a 16-11 loss to Sterling in Class 3A regional action.
It was a scoreless game until the third when the Black Bears exploded for 10 runs. Facing elimination in the fifth inning, the Swathers came up with five runs, and then scored two in the sixth and four in the seventh. Sterling, though, remained afloat with a four-run sixth.
“We lost, but put up a good fight,” Hesston coach Alyssa Kroeker said.
Amazingly, the Swathers pounded out 22 hits, including a 5-for-5 day by Emily Shirley and she also drove in three runs. Kinsley Miller, Kailey Jo Ince and Mackenzie Koehn all had three hits.
The Swathers, 0-21 last year, finished the season 7-12.
Sterling wound up losing in the finals to Southeast of Saline.
