When Bethany College upset KCAC volleyball power Ottawa recently, that caught the attention of the McPherson College Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs realized then they couldn’t take their arch-rivals for granted here Wednesday and they came out and played a tremendous match for a 3-0 shutout before an adoring Sport Center throng.

Mac demolished Bethany 25-10, 25-13 in the first two sets. The Swedes were strong in set 3 before the Bulldogs completed the blanking, 25-23.

The Bulldogs are still on the fringe of the championship picture with an 8-4 conference record and are now 12-6 overall. They will compete in the KCAC Fall Fling at Hutchinson’s Sports Arena on Friday and Saturday, with matches Friday against Saint Mary and York, followed by Saturday matches against powerhouse teams Kansas Wesleyan and Ottawa. These are all conference matches and should shape the race as every team plays four times.

Lexi Kite led the Bulldogs in kills with 14, while Morgan Little (18) and Kaitlyn Heinis (13) were assist leaders. Jamie Siess led in digs with 12.

Three Swedes shared the team kill lead with 5 — Azucena Duarte, Kim Stringer and Natasha Fiame — while Opal Drapeau had a team-high 13 assists. Duarte led in digs with 10.

Bethan, 4-8 in the KCAC and 5-15 overall, plays Tabor, Friends, Bethel and Oklahoma Wesleyan at Hutchinson this weekend.
