Swede women roll; men lose at buzzer

YORK, Neb. — Bethany College’s women’s basketball team evened its KCAC record at 3-3 and moved past .500 for the season at 7-6 with a 76-42 rout of York College on Wednesday.

Bethany was up 20-12 after 10 minutes and steadily built on the lead in the second half.

Lauren Welsch, the KCAC’s reigning Offensive Player of the Week, showed no letup with 13 points. Canton-Galva product Cassidy Enns and Hailey Mayfield scored 11 apiece and Marissa Pope rounded out the balanced attack with 10.

The Swede men just missed on the sweep as Michael Johnson’s buzzer-beater gave York a pulsating 91-90 victory, leaving Bethany at 2-4 in the KCAC and 5-8 overall.

It was a career night for Bethany guard Tyler Larkin, who scored 37 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds. He just missed a triple-double with 9 assists.

Ryan Wilson added 14 for the Swedes.

Chris Smith and Mark Dean led the Panthers with 19 points apiece.

Both Bethany teams play Saturday at Tabor.
