The days of the double-digit routs are probably over for the McPherson High girls soccer team as the competition starts to get much tougher.
The Bullpups get down to serious business tonight as they host Andover Central at 6:00 at McPherson Stadium for the right to advance to the Class 4-1A State Tournament.
Listen to all the action on 96.7 KBBE-FM with Voice of the Bullpups Jim Joyner on the call.
The Bullpups are a class-best 15-1-1 and lead the state in scoring with 118 goals, while allowing only 7. One of those wins came over tonight’s opponent Andover Central in the second game of the season, 4-0.
The Bullpups’ last seven games have resulted in a 69-1 advantage, with the only goal allowed coming on a penalty kick against the MHS reserves. They have reached 10 goals in a game an incredible six times.
Bullpup coach Chris Adrian said that Andover Central, 8-6-3 on the year and a 2-0 winner over Buhler in Tuesday’s first round, has a solid defensive team and that the Bullpups will have to be efficient. If they triumph, they will be home for a state quarterfinal game on Tuesday, the winner on that night advancing to the Final Four next Friday and Saturday at Bethel College in North Newton.
Aislinn Hughes leads MHS with a school-record 28 goals and also has 15 assists. Claire Hedlund (18,11) and Jessiey Kynaston (16,11) also are double-double players, while Kenzee Godwin (13, 8) and Hannah Hageman (11, 4) give MHS five players who have scored in double digits, an almost unheard of feat.
