Another tough test for Vikes on Friday

LINDSBORG — The Class 3A District 5 football playoff picture can become much clearer on Friday.

Smoky Valley, in the driver’s seat at 3-0 in the district, can move one step closer to a perfect regular season when it hosts always-competitive Halstead.

Meanwhile, Hesston and Chapman tangle. Both those teams are 2-1, as is Halstead.

In points, Smoky is plus 50, Chapman is plus 33, Halstead is plus 26 and Hesston is plus 16.

Smoky Valley would assure itself of advancing to the playoffs with a win. All the Vikings have left is winless Rock Creek.

The Vikings won the showdown of unbeatens last week with a 30-22 victory over Chapman, leading by as many as 16 in the second half. They are now 6-0 on the season.

Tim Lambert rushed for 156 yards and was augmented by Lane Schrag, who had 130 yards on just 8 tries. Blake Heble again led the Viking defense.

Halstead is certainly capable. It lost early in the season to Pratt 32-16 and its other loss came to Hesston 38-22, but it’s a different Swather team now that Cameron Cox and Parker Roth are back.
