SALINA — McPherson High’s boys swimming team enjoyed another banner day on Thursday in a double dual hosted by Salina South and Salina Central.

MHS won both divisions. Also on hand were Derby, Andover Central, Andover and Central Christian. The meet was scored in two divisions, with the South division not including Central and the Central division not including South.

“Not sure that I expected this,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said. “Across the board great swims by these ‘Pups. With the top swimmers from Andover Central, Salina South and a 30-plus team from Derby, my initial thoughts on this meet were that we would have to swim really well and that even if we did it would be close. I told these guys before the meet that we had to have maximum effort from everyone to have a chance. Boy did they go out and do it.”

The 200 freestyle relay team of William Powers, Justus Hampton, Zach LeBlanc and Dawson VanGoethem broke the school record. The 200 medley team also excelled as Silas Steinert, VanGoethem, Powers and Hampton had a PR.

Powers just missed the school record in the 50 freestyle with a 21.99, with the record 21.96, and also won the 100 butterfly. Matthew Powers qualified for state in the 200, while VanGothem took 1 1/2 seconds off his best time in the 100 freestyle in a winning effort. Hampton won the 100 backstroke and earned a state time and also won the 200 freestyle. VanGoethem earned a state time in the 100 breaststroke.

“This was a great meet with a lot of energy,” Morrow said. “We had some McPherson folks show up to watch and they boys really responded to the support.”
