MHS swimmers win 3rd straight league title

WICHITA — It doesn’t get any more exciting than this.

All McPherson High’s No. 1-seeded 400 freestyle relay team had to do was finish its race on Saturday in the AVCTL Division III-III-IV Championships and the team title was clinched for the third year in a row.

But the Bullpups didn’t finish in what was the final event of the day. They had the lead when one of the MHS swimmers suffered an injury and the Bullpups were disqualified.

That opened the door for Maize South and had it won the event, it would have overtaken the Bullpups and ended their title reign.

But thanks to Andover Central holding off the Mavericks, the Bullpups were champions again with a 410-406 edge.

“Not sure I've been in a more exciting meet than today,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said. “It was a magnification of our entire season with all the guys stepping up, racing and pulling in points, that we had enough at the end to hold off Maize South. I told the team after the meet that they had accomplished something that no other MHS boys swim team had done before, winning our league title 3 years in a row. Four years ago we lost league by one point and after that they realized how valuable every person on the team is.  Such a great group of guys to coach, I couldn't be more proud of their heart and desire.”

The Bullpups followed their usual formula of placing three swimmers in a multitude of events. They received double gold from Justus Hampton in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, while Dawson VanGoethem won the 50 freestyle.

Hampton broke the school record in the 500, one that was more than 20 years old as Nathan Burkey was the previous holder. He also broke his own school record in the 200 individual medley.

A key event was the 500 freestyle as the Bullpups racked up the points with four placers among the Top 7 as this was an event where you could count four in an individual race, but only one in the relays.

Another highlight was that Rece Reiman and Simon Steinert qualified for state in the 100 backstroke. MHS will take seven individual qualifiers to state this upcoming weekend and all three relays qualified.
