The McPherson Bullpups 18U baseball team picked up a pair of impromptu victories here Monday against Sedgwick.

It had originally been scheduled as the 16s playing, but the 18s, coming off a 2-1 performance in the rain-shortened Hooper Showcase over the weekend, stayed on their recent hot streak.

The opener resulted in an 11-1 win behind the solid pitching of Jared McCartney, who tossed a three-hitter and fanned six in five innings while walking only two. Aiden Hoover, Jaytin Gumm, Hunter Alvord, Jakob Feil and Tucker Pelnar furnished two hits each, with Hoover and Brandon Malm hitting doubles. Malm led in RBIs with three.

“Jared was really efficient on the mound and we were able to jump out to a lead early on,” McPherson coach Matt McCasland said. “We competed well at the plate and were able to consistently stretch out our lead.”

The Bullpups were pushed in Game 2, but still came away with a 9-5 success. Collin Pearson and Tucker Pelnar were able to get some work in with Pelnar toiling the final three innings and allowing only one run.

The bats stayed hot as Feil hit a pair of triples, while Dylan Rinker added a double. Feil was the only player with two hits, but eight of the nine regulars collected at least one  hit. Gumm knocked in two runs.

“We came out flat in Game 2,” McCasland said. “This has been an issue so far this summer. We have struggled to come out with the right amount of focus after winning Game 1. Tucker came in and threw really well. He really stabilized the game for us, and gave us a shot to come back.”

The 18s are now 10-4 on the year and compete in the Salina Grand Slam starting Thursday.
