Every game matters.
McPherson College’s basketball teams will have one more week left in the regular season after Saturday’s crucial road games in Salina against Kansas Wesleyan.
Game time is 5:00 for the women, 7:00 for the men.
For the Mac men, a win keeps them in the hunt for the KCAC championship. Ottawa (16-5 in the KCAC) has a one-game lead over Oklahoma Wesleyan (15-6), while Friends (15-7), McPherson College (14-7), Southwestern (14-7), Bethel (13-8) and Kansas Wesleyan (13-8) are all jockeying for position.
The Mac-KW game is the biggest on the schedule. Ottawa, Bethel, Oklahoma Wesleyan, Friends and Southwestern play the five teams at the bottom of the standings.
The Bulldogs were a 15-point winner, 80-65, over the Coyotes when the teams met last month at the Sport Center.
The Mac women are in must-win mode, even to have a chance to make the playoffs.
Kansas Wesleyan is leading the conference and dominated the Bulldogs in the first meeting. The final was 75-58, but the Coyotes were up huge in the second half before Mac made a charge for cosmetic purposes.
The Top 5 teams are locked in – Kansas Wesleyan, Sterling, Bethany, Tabor and Avila – but six teams are battling for three spots. Oklahoma Wesleyan leads the way at 10-11, but also in the hunt are Friends (10-12), Bethel (9-12), Southwestern (9-12), McPherson College (8-13) and Ottawa (8-13).
Southwestern is a probable underdog on Saturday against Bethany and Ottawa figures to lose to Sterling. Oklahoma Wesleyan and Bethel are likely underdogs to Tabor and Avila, respectively.
This is Mac’s last regular-season road game as it closes at home next week with games against Avila and Ottawa.
