AUGUSTA – McPherson High’s girls have an uncanny knack of getting teams sped up well beyond their capabilities.

The Bullpups came out with their traditional fullcourt pressure defense on Tuesday that had Augusta playing at a supersonic pace it’s not accustomed to and the result was a 70-31 Bullpup running-clock rout.

The Bullpups are now 4-0 in AVCTL Division III and wrap up the first time through the league schedule on Friday at Circle in what has become tradition as the two teams have ruled the roost the last few years. The Bullpups improved to 6-2 overall.

“Tonight was really good,” MHS coach Chris Strathman said. “Our focus was better for longer stretches at a time. That’s one of the big things we talked about before the game was to be able to do that because we didn’t have very long stretches of focus on Friday against Winfield.”

MHS scored 23 points in both the first and second quarters to lead 46-15 as it came out firing, including 5 3-pointers. Kassidy Beam’s 14 points nearly matched the first-half total of the Orioles.

“Offensively (in the first half) we were pretty sharp,” Strathman said. “We weren’t shooting it all that great for some stretches, but we were getting some offensive boards and second chances. And we did a good job of converting those. Did a pretty good job with our presses overall.”

Grace Pyle scored 13 of her 20 points in the third quarter and Beam added another field goal to her total, giving her 16 points on the night. Peyton Howard did an excellent job of getting inside position to score 10 points, making 5 of 6 shots.

MHS won the JV game, 46-32. Harper Smith’s 10 points led a balanced MHS offense.

The ninth-grade girls rolled to a 45-26 victory as Alex Romero and Jayla McLeod tallied 10 points apiece to lead the way..
