The next three days are going to be busy for the McPherson High wrestling teams.
Both the boys and girls will host El Dorado at 6 p.m. Thursday for a dual match. The boys then compete on Friday and Saturday in the prestigious Newton Tournament of Champions, while the girls head to Abilene on Friday.
MHS coach Doug Kretzer said even with the long layoff, his team has been hit with some injuries. The Bullpup boys will most likely be open at two weights against El Dorado, but he still likes their chances. As for the girls, El Dorado doesn’t have a lot of numbers.
Newton is generally the most difficult tournament on the schedule and due to COVID, it has some changes.
“It’s going to be a different format,” Kretzer said. “We will wrestle 106-145 on Friday, and 152-285 Saturday. We have a young team and this will be an opportunity to see some of the best in the state. This will be a good tournament for our kids with state tournament aspirations to see where they are. The next three weeks is going to be a lot of competition and that is exactly what we need. The state series starts the first weekend in February, so the stakes get high quickly.”
As far as the girls at Abilene, Kretzer said it should be good experience and the Bullpup wrestlers will get in a number of matches. “This will be a good tournament for us,” he said.
